I love this interview! The honesty about Elizabeth's writing process is so refreshing. The image of her running on "vibes" and not having it all perfectly planned out made me laugh because, let's be honest, who really does? It's a great reminder that it's okay to embrace the messiness of creativity. Sometimes the best writing comes from those unexpected moments of inspiration.
Enjoyed all of this - heartfelt insights and great recommendations. Love the idea of annual New Yorker desk pad. And reading of the 1:1 time has sparked some ideas for my own reflections on growing up with a single parent.
That printer? It was a dot-matrix -- also ESSENTIAL for printing out long banners that read, "Happy Birthday!" and "Congratulations!" (Thanks for reminding me of the magic of transferring story to page. I, too, was smitten.)
Thank you for this beautiful interview Jana. I’m looking forward to reading Elizabeth’s memoir whenever it lands.
The evening for each child practice sounds nourishing. I’d love to know how Elizabeth weaves this 1:1 time in with her other child. I’m considering (thoughtfully) how I might give this a go. I’ve had similar days out with different children and we also have 1) non triplet days where they (as triplets) don’t see one another plus 2) YES days which are great fun for all and I say yes to pretty well anything within safety and reason. Want pancakes with mustard? YES. Want to watch Breaking bad that you can’t usually watch? YES but only on a YES day. You get the gist.
Solo mums are always juggling one adult to however many children there are. Hence my question about the practicalities of what happens to the other child or children on the 1:1 evenings?
Thank you, Danusia, for your kind praise! I'm so glad you've enjoyed the interview. Elizabeth is admirable, and I was so pleased when she agreed to be featured! What a voice! I'm sure her memoir will be an inspirational book 😊
I, like you, think of 1:1 time as a fantastic idea. It reminds me of my dad. From when I was a child to my early teenage years, he did that on Friday afternoons with me. He'd let me choose where we went and what we snacked on. I always treasured that 1:1 time with him. 😊 I will let Elizabeth answer the ins and outs.

I too was that dreamy kid who survived childhood by living in made up stories in my head.... I wonder if this is a common experience for writers 🤔😊

What great memory making times you had with your Dad! Thanks for sharing that with me 💖
